News Release
REF NO.: 70
SUBJECT: Memorial University to host Go Abroad Fair and Mini International Bazaar
DATE: February 4, 2013
Memorial Universitys Go Abroad Office is encouraging its students to literally picture themselves abroad with an international green screen photo booth at the Go Abroad Fair and Mini International Bazaar this week.
On Wednesday, Feb. 6, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. on the third floor of the University Centre on the St. Johns campus, students can get started on their international study, work or volunteer experience by posing in front of large-scale images of Paris Eiffel tower, a Russian cathedral in Moscow or a Korean temple.
Everyone who attends the fair can actually visualize themselves in these iconic and exotic locales, said Natalie Spracklin, go abroad co-ordinator with Career Development and Experiential Learning at Memorial. Students can just jump in front of the screen and theyre there.
As well, students will immerse themselves in the tastes and flavours of a variety of global cultures by sampling delicious cuisine prepared by international student groups representing six different countries.
From academic opportunities with the Department of German and Russians Heidelberg field school program to the Faculty of Arts Frecker Institute program in Saint-Pierre, France, to practical and logistical advice from professional service providers such as Travel Cuts and the JEMA International Travel Clinic, there will be a wealth of information for students about what to expect when travelling to and from other countries and how to go about making their go abroad goals a reality.
The go abroad experience is a transformational one for students; they undergo quite a lot of personal growth, said Ms. Spracklin. Students return home with a deeper intercultural awareness and a more profound understanding of themselves. They acquire those soft skills -- adaptability, problem-solving, self-management and team work -- so sought after by employers today. And here at Career Development and Experiential Learning, we can help them articulate those skills in their resumé.
