SUBJECT: Memorial University business professor named master teacher by marketing association

A marketing professor at Memorial University has been named a master teacher by the Marketing Management Association (MMA).
Lyle Wetsch is the first winner from a Canadian business school to take home the 2013 Hormel Master Teacher Award, which was handed out on Friday, March 1, at the MMA annual spring conference in Chicago, Ill. Prof. Wetsch is an associate professor of marketing at Memorials Faculty of Business Administration.
I was very pleased to be named the winner of this prestigious award, said Prof. Wetsch. There are many past recipients of the award that I know and consider to be exceptional educators, and just to be considered in their company is an honour.
The Hormel Master Teacher Award competition recognizes outstanding marketing educators throughout North America who demonstrate a history of effective teaching and innovative approaches in the classroom. Applications are submitted for consideration to a panel of judges, who narrow the field to 10 people.
These 10 people receive 2013 Hormel Meritorious Teaching Awards and the top three are identified as finalists for the 2013 Hormel Master Teacher Award. Each finalist gives a 20-minute presentation during the conference on their teaching goals and accomplishments, following which the winner is determined. The three finalists also receive teaching excellence awards.
Prof. Wetsch has long been an innovative educator and has developed a reputation for using social media to develop an understanding of marketing concepts. His Personal and Business Branding with Social Media course, for example, recognizes the role social media plays in employment success as well as the importance of a consistent and dynamic online presence for both employees and business owners.
Prof. Wetsch says being the first winner from a Canadian business school should draw attention to the quality of programs that are being offered north of the border.
We have exceptional programs in Canada that are often overlooked in the main public and academic press in the U.S., he said. I am pleased to be able to bring some attention to Canadian academic programs in the eyes of global educators and to help them see the great things that are being accomplished in many Canadian business schools.
Dr. Wilfred Zerbe, dean of the Faculty of Business Administration, says Prof. Wetschs success brings deserved recognition to Memorials business programs.

It speaks to the quality of our business programs that Prof. Wetsch was singled out for the 2013 Hormel Master Teacher Award. The commitment of our teaching staff and the innovations in our curriculum are second to none, and its gratifying to see one of our top educators being recognized for his efforts.
