SUBJECT: Memorial University announces 2012 Alumni Tribute Awards recipients

Memorial University today announced the recipients of the 2012 Alumni Tribute Awards. The awards recognize individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to their communities and to the university.
Dr. Andrew Furey (B.Sc.’97, MD’01, and M.Sc.’04) is this year’s Alumnus of the Year award recipient. Dr. Furey is an orthopedic surgeon and assistant professor of surgery at Memorial University’s Faculty of Medicine and the co-founder and president of Team Broken Earth, a volunteer task force supporting the relief effort in Haiti. Under Dr. Furey’s leadership, Team Broken Earth has completed six successful missions to Haiti, providing care for more than 500 patients per week. Dr. Furey is also a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada and has published numerous research papers in the field of orthopedic surgery.
Lieutenant-Governor John C. Crosbie (LLD’99) is this year’s recipient of the J.D. Eaton Alumni Award. Dr. Crosbie, Newfoundland and Labrador’s current lieutenant-governor and former chancellor of Memorial, is one of the province’s most notable political figures. He is a renowned Newfoundlander and Labradorian and a dedicated and steadfast supporter of the province and Memorial University.
Tom Mills (BA’70, BSW’71, BVE’76, MSW ’92) is being recognized with the Alumni Award for Outstanding Community Service. Mr. Mills has had a tremendous impact on the lives of many immigrants and new Canadians in this province, and he has been an advocate for those fighting against adversity throughout his successful career as a family counsellor. A lifelong learner and dedicated volunteer, Mr. Mills’ commitment to helping others and serving his community has inspired all who’ve known and worked with him.
W. Josh Quinton (B.Comm. (co-op) ’07) will receive the Horizon Award, recognizing exceptional achievement by alumni under the age of 35. At just 28 years old, Mr. Quinton is quickly moving up the ranks in the financial industry in New York City. He joined Bloomberg in 2007 where he now leads a team covering pensions, hedge funds, central banks and money managers in the northeast United States and Canada. Mr. Quinton is an award-winning employee at Bloomberg who regularly consults with influential decision makers, providing clients a critical edge by connecting them to a dynamic network of information, people and ideas. A strong champion for Memorial, he is an avid volunteer and mentor and serves on the Finance Committee of the Grenfell Association of America in New York.
“Once again this year, there were many exceptional Tribute Award nominees,” said Brian King, chair of the Alumni Tribute Awards selection committee. “The 2012 winners are highly accomplished and community-focused individuals who have made significant contributions at local, national and global levels. I offer my sincere congratulations to these outstanding individuals.”
The 31st Annual Alumni Tribute Awards ceremony will take place Tuesday, Nov. 20, at 6 p.m. at the Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland. Brian King is the chair of the Alumni Tribute Awards selection committee and the awards ceremony.
