SUBJECT: Two new projects to encourage women’s participation in oil and gas industry

A $60,000 donation by organizers of last year’s Fuelling the Future: Women in Oil and Gas conference will help encourage women’s participation in the oil and gas industry by funding two special projects.
“The conference received generous financial support from sponsors such as oil companies, suppliers to the industry, governmental agencies and through conference participant registration fees, leading to a surplus of about $60,000,” said Mike Clair, associate director of public policy at the Harris Centre, Memorial University. “The organizing committee for the conference was delighted to have this extra funding to continue the work of the conference, which was to stimulate more female participation in the oil and gas industry.”
One project will create a web portal that will collect all relevant information girls and women might need in order to identify possible careers in oil and gas, including any educational programs that can provide them with the necessary skills. The site will also feature videos of women already working in the industry, so as to provide real-life examples to those women considering entering the field. The web portal should become the go-to site for any girl or woman interested in exploring a career in the provincial oil and gas sector.
The first project is a collaboration between Women in Science and Engineering Newfoundland and Labrador (WISE-NL) and the Canadian Centre for Women in Science, Engineering, Trades and Technology (“the WinSETT Centre”).
The second project is a collaboration between the Newfoundland and Labrador Organization of Women Entrepreneurs (NLOWE) and the Newfoundland and Labrador Oil and Gas Industry Association (Noia). It consists of the organization and hosting of training events in four communities throughout the province. These events will encourage entrepreneurship and business growth by women-owned enterprises interested in the oil and gas sector.
The Fuelling the Future: Women in Oil and Gas conference was organized by Memorial University and took place in March 2011. The event brought nearly 400 representatives from all sectors of the oil and gas industry and from across the country, the U.S. and Western Europe to St. John’s.
Each project will receive $30,000. Both projects are scheduled for completion in December 2012 and will be advertised extensively to girls and women throughout the province.
