SUBJECT: Speaking of Engineering puts spotlight on safety measures in process engineering

The spring edition of Speaking of Engineering will take place on Monday, March 26, at the S. J. Carew (Engineering) Building on the St. John’s campus of Memorial University. The event begins at 7 p.m. and members of the media and general public are encouraged to attend.
Speaking of Engineering is hosted by the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University and the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador. The popular lecture series highlights the profession of engineering through engaging themes and speakers from a variety of engineering backgrounds.
The guest speaker at the spring edition of Speaking of Engineering is Dr. Sam Mannan, regents professor with the Chemical Engineering Department at Texas A&M University. Dr. Mannan's topic will be safety measures in process engineering.
“It is my pleasure to welcome Dr. Mannan to Memorial University and the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. He has a great wealth of experience and expertise to pass on to those of us in attendance and I expect his lecture topic to be of great interest to the many professionals in our province who work in the offshore oil and gas industry,” said R. (Venky) Venkatesan, dean pro tempore, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, Memorial University. “The offshore oil and gas industry is a growing part of our economy and, as a result, there is a need to continue researching the latest and best safety practices for this sector. Dr. Mannan’s lecture will provide us with important information into this matter.”
In addition to his work at Texas A&M University, Dr. Mannan is also the director of the Mary Kay O'Connor Process Safety Center at the Texas Engineering Experiment Station. The mission of the center is to improve safety in the chemical process industry by conducting programs and research activities that promote safety as second nature for all plant personnel in their day-to-day activities.
He is a registered professional engineer in the states of Texas and Louisiana, is certified by the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors and is a Certified Safety Professional. Dr. Mannan’s experience is wide-ranging, covering process design of chemical plants and refineries, computer simulation of engineering problems, mathematical modeling, process safety, risk assessment, inherently safer design, critical infrastructure vulnerability assessment, aerosol modeling and reactive and energetic materials assessments.
Dr. Mannan’s research interests include development of inherently safer processes, the application of calorimetric methods for the assessment of reactive hazards and the application of consequence analyses to assess the impact of process plant incidents.
“Dr. Mannan’s lecture topic is very timely given the successful and continued growth of the Newfoundland and Labrador oil and gas industry,” said Dr. Faisal Khan, process engineering chair with Memorial’s Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. “I have met and worked alongside Dr. Mannan in the past and enjoyed discussing this topic with him. His presentation into improving safety measures in process engineering will be informative and engaging, especially for our process engineering students.”
The spring edition of Speaking of Engineering takes place in the Bruneau Lecture Theatre (EN-2006) of the S. J. Carew (Engineering) Building. Free parking is provided in Lot 16 and a reception will follow Dr. Mannan’s presentation. Admission into the lecture is free.
