SUBJECT: PSA: Information session at Memorial for future Aboriginal teachers

DATE: March 13, 2012

The Faculty of Education at Memorial University is hosting an information session this Friday, March 16, for all Aboriginal students (non-status/status, First Nations, Metis and Inuit) interested in becoming a teacher.
“The faculty is very interested in providing information for Aboriginal students on how to pursue becoming a teacher through their studies at Memorial,” said Hayward Blake, field services co-ordinator with the Faculty of Education, who will be hosting the session this week.
“Aboriginal children benefit from having Aboriginal teachers,” said Dr. Maura Hanrahan, Memorial’s special adviser for Aboriginal affairs. “These teachers are especially interested in their shared culture and history and can bring this interest to their teaching. They also serve as role models for the children.”
The session will take place from 1-2 p.m. in the Education Building, room 5004/5. Refreshments will be served. Any interested students may RSVP to Cherie Hussey at chussey@mun.ca or by phone, 709-864-6934.
