SUBJECT: Memorial University writer-in-residence offering creative writing workshops

Memorial University’s writer-in-residence, Anne Simpson, will offer a series of creative writing workshops in the coming months.
Two poetry workshops will be held in October and two fiction workshops will take place in November.
The full schedule is as follows:
Monday, Oct. 3, 7-9 p.m.
Incantations, Chants, and Spells: Using Repetition and Rhythm in Poetry
Monday, Oct. 17, 7-9 p.m.
The Long Poem: Inventing a Form to Suit Poetic Content
Monday, Nov. 7, 7-9 p.m.
Powerful Openings in Fiction: What Drives the Story?
Monday, Nov. 21, 7-9 p.m.
Under the Skin of Your Fiction: Getting Inside the Character You Think You Know
Those interested in registering for one or more of the workshops should contact the Department of English at (709) 864-8277 or english@mun.ca. Admission is on a first-come, first-served basis, and places are limited to 12 per workshop.
All workshops will be held in seminar room A-3033, in Memorial’s Department of English, Arts and Administration building., Elizabeth Avenue.
Anne Simpson is the author of two novels, Canterbury Beach (2001) and Falling (2008), three books of poetry, Light Falls Through You (2000), Loop (2003), and Quick (2007), and a collection of essays, The Marram Grass: Notes on Poetry and Otherness (2009).
Her poetry has been awarded the Griffin Poetry Prize, while her short fiction has received the Journey Prize and her second novel, Falling, was awarded the Dartmouth Award for Fiction and was longlisted for the Dublin IMPAC Literary Award.
The writer-in-residence is funded by Memorial University's dean of arts and by the Canada Council for the Arts.
