SUBJECT: Memorial University to host national post-secondary governance conference
DATE: April 17, 2012
Memorial University will be the host institution when university governors from across the country gather later this month.
The Canadian University Boards Association (CUBA) conference takes place April 19-21 at the Sheraton Newfoundland Hotel in St. Johns. Some 120 delegates will take in the conference, a group that includes the chairs of the governing boards of most Canadian universities, including the chair of Memorials Board of Regents, Bob Simmonds.
This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase Memorial to university leaders from across the country, said Mr. Simmonds, the chair of the 2012 CUBA conference.
Reflecting on the conference theme, Leadership on the Edge, Mr. Simmonds said participants will be informed, engaged and entertained in ways that will reinforce their proven ability to balance on the edge as governance leaders in their institutions.
Speakers at CUBA 2012 include Rick Hillier, Memorials chancellor and Canadas former chief of defence staff; Zita Cobb, founder and president of the Shorefast Foundation, which is transforming Fogo Island into a world-class tourist destination; and Dr. Kevin Lynch, vice-chair of the BMO Financial Group.
As well, a presidential panel will discuss current issues involving the administration and operations of Canadian universities. The panel includes Memorials president, Dr. Gary Kachanoski; Dr. Robert Campbell, president of Mount Allison University; Dr. Alaa Abd-El-Aziz, president, University of Prince Edward Island; and Dr. Tom Traves, president, Dalhousie University.
A number of other speakers and special events are planned for the three-day conference.
