SUBJECT: Junior high students to compete in Marine Institute ROV SCOUT competition

The Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) of Memorial University will host its Marine Advanced Technology Education Centre (MATE) remotely operated vehicle (ROV) SCOUT competition for junior high students on March 30-31.
The competition takes place at the Marine Institute’s flume tank. The media and general public are invited to attend.
Taking part in the opening ceremonies will be Keith Hutchings, minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador; Brent Decker, project engineer, ExxonMobil; and Dwight Howse, head, School of Ocean Technology, MI.
The event gives junior high school students from across the province the opportunity to design, build and operate a remotely operated vehicle to execute specified tasks defined by the MATE Centre of Monterey, Calif. The goals of the competition are to broaden student interest in ocean technology careers and build a new generation of ROV teams for the MATE ROV high school and post-secondary competitions.
This year’s competition theme highlights the role that ROVs play in evaluating Second World War shipwrecks and the potentially hazardous material they may still contain. During the competition, teams will have to complete these tasks: inflate lift bags to remove debris from a simulated ship’s hull, transplant simulated endangered coral and collect samples of oil from the shipwreck.
The opening ceremonies of the junior high ROV competition begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 30. The competition will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 31.
Twenty-four junior high schools will compete in this year’s event: Amalgamated Academy (Bay Roberts); Beaconsfield Junior High (St. John’s); Botwood Collegiate; Clarenville Middle School; Crescent Collegiate (South Dildo); Frank Roberts Junior High (Foxtrap); GC Rowe Junior High (Corner Brook); Heritage Collegiate (Lethbridge); Hillview Academy (Norris Arm); Holy Cross Junior High (St. John’s); Holy Cross School (Eastport); Holy Redeemer Elementary (Spaniard’s Bay); Holy Trinity High School (Torbay); Leo Burke Academy (Bishop Falls); Lewisporte Intermediate; MacDonald Drive Junior High (St. John’s); Mobile Central High; Mount Pearl Intermediate; St. Kevin’s Junior High (Goulds); St. Mark’s School (King’s Cove); St. Michael’s High (Bell Island); St. Paul’s Junior High (St. John’s); St. Peter’s Junior High (Mount Pearl); and Villanova Junior High (Conception Bay South).
