SUBJECT: Faculty of Business Administration receives $56,000 from BDO Canada LLP
DATE: September 12, 2011
The Faculty of Business Administration is pleased to announce a partnership with BDO Canada LLP (BDO) and the creation of the BDO Canada Leadership Award.
The new scholarship will award $56,000 to the most deserving and motivated accounting students who have distinguished themselves through academic merit and demonstrated a record of involvement in their academic program and communities. It will actively support and encourage academic excellence and leadership among Canadas next generation of accounting leaders.
The Newfoundland and Labrador partners, Steve Belanger, Boyde Clarke and Bill McGettigan of St. Johns and Jeffrey Follett of Corner Brook, have contributed their portion of the scholarship in memory of their colleague Robert Fleming, CA.
It is tremendously rewarding for all of us at the BDO Newfoundland and Labrador offices to support a scholarship in the memory of our colleague, Robert Fleming, said Mr. Belanger. This opportunity is the perfect testament to recognize a leader and it allows us to continue to build our region.
Our firm has built a strong relationship with the Faculty of Business Administration over the years, consistently hiring students from its reputable accounting program, said Mr. Keith Farlinger, CEO, BDO, Canada. We have seen the individuals who graduate from Memorial build great careers for themselves based on solid educational backgrounds.
Dr. Wilfred Zerbe, dean, Faculty of Business Administration, is pleased that the award will recognize many of the facultys students for their achievements and academic excellence.
We sincerely thank BDO for this generous donation to our faculty, said Dr. Zerbe. Our commerce program is designed to support the talents of our students whom we believe have the potential to make major contributions to the accounting field.
BDO is one of the leading accounting and advisory firms in Canada with 90 years of experience providing value-added assurance, accounting, taxation and advisory services to a broad range of clients. The former Newfoundland and Labrador firm, Belanger Clarke Follett & McGettigan, merged with BDO Jan. 1, 2011. This merger created a desire to support accounting students in the province, which led to the creation of the BDO Canada Leadership Award.
