SUBJECT: World-renowned educators to visit St. John’s as part of international conference hosted by Memorial’s Faculty of Education

Internationally-renowned educational speaker Sir John Daniel will be visiting St. John’s as the plenary keynote speaker of Edge 2010: E-Learning, The Horizon and Beyond – an international conference hosted by Memorial University’s Faculty of Education.
Sir Daniel is the president of the Commonwealth of Learning and has wide international experience in universities and the United Nations. Among his 290 publications are his books, Mega-Universities and Knowledge Media: Technology Strategies for Higher Education and Mega-Schools, Technology and Teachers: Achieving Education for All.
His talk at Edge 2010, Education, technology and digital culture, explores how 60 years of inventiveness and development have created a digital age accompanied by aspirations of digital freedom. Focusing on the developing world, the paper will explore how education can embrace the digital culture in order to narrow the gap between the ideals of the UDHR and the realities of life in a diverse but interconnected world.
The conference opening will also include remarks from Memorial University’s new President, Dr. Gary Kachanoski, Dr. Alice Collins, acting dean, Faculty of Education, and Ann Marie Vaughan, director, Distance Education and Learning Technologies (DELT), who will introduce Sir John Daniel.
This is the second annual Edge conference. This year’s conference theme explores new and exciting technologies in education, from K-12 to post-secondary, and hopes to spark an international dialogue on new and emerging technologies in education. The program includes a wide range of regional, national and international speakers and sessions exploring a broad scope of technology in education and online learning tools.
Edge 2010 opens on October 13, 8:45 a.m., at the Delta Hotel in St. John’s.
