SUBJECT: SIFE Memorial heads to Toronto to participate in national competition
DATE: May 4, 2011
SIFE Memorial is heading to Toronto to compete with over 50 teams from universities across the country at the national competition happening May 9-11. The winning team from this competition will go on to represent Canada at the SIFE World Cup this October in Malaysia.
The mandate of SIFE is to work with leaders in business and higher education to make a difference in their communities, while also developing the skills to become socially-responsible business leaders.
Dr. Gary Kachanoski, president and vice-chancellor, Memorial University, said, SIFE are terrific ambassadors for this university and for the community. At Memorial we believe in reaching out to our community to build a more dynamic Newfoundland and Labrador, and SIFE Memorial exemplifies that commitment.
Dr. Wilfred Zerbe, dean, Faculty of Business Administration, believes SIFE is making a significant impact on the community. SIFEs comprehensive projects address important economic and social objectives, said Dr. Zerbe. For example, Be Green, an interactive environmental summer program, had over 1,200 participating youth across the country last year. SIFE Memorial is the first team in the country to have achieved this level of national reach with a community based program.
Recently, the team participated in a highly successful regional competition, winning the top position of regional champion. They also placed first in all three topic competitions: the Financial Education, Go Green and Entrepreneurship Challenges. They are past world champions and four-time national champions. No other university student team in Canada has ever achieved the same number of national and international wins.
