SUBJECT: People and science meet for a Science Rendezvous

Want to have a close encounter with science? An event planned for this Saturday on the St. John’s Campus of Memorial University will bring people and science together for a Science Rendezvous.
The event is part of a Canada-wide, free grassroots festival targeted to people of all ages. Initiated in Toronto in 2008, Science Rendezvous has grown to involve more than 2,000 volunteers and leaders in science and technology at 300 events across the country.
“This year’s events will celebrate 2011 as the International Year of Chemistry (IYC),” said Rebecca Dean, event coordinator and past president of the Chemistry Graduate Society. “During the event, participants of all ages will get to do safe and fun hands-on activities including making slime, invisible ink, and 'elephant's toothpaste.'”
Science Rendezvous events are aimed at developing collaborative partnerships between educational institutions, libraries, science-based associations and outreach programs, and promoting science awareness as well as science culture and literacy.
“The goal is to provide a positive experience around science, and to engage non-scientists as well as scientists to think about the importance of a science culture in a civil society,” said Erika Merschrod, an associate professor in the Department of Chemistry, and a member of the national events planning committee for IYC.
The Memorial University event will take place Saturday, May 7, from noon to 3 p.m. in the Chemistry-Physics building, room C-2016.
