SUBJECT: MI Ocean Net hosts community clean ups this week

The Marine Institutes MI Ocean Net will collaborate with volunteers from the Avalon Peninsula this week to host a number of beach clean ups. The media is welcome to attend these events.
Beaches often see a lot of traffic and suffer from a lot of litter, fire pits, broken glass and ocean debris, said Justin Dearing, conference coordinator, MI Ocean Net. In addition to our Friends of Beaches volunteers, were encouraging members of the community to join us in cleaning our areas.
Activities will begin at the Institutes Holyrood Marine Base Open House on Thursday, July 28. The establishment of a new Friends of Beaches Holyrood Chapter will be marked with a beach cleanup at 11 a.m.
On Friday, July 29, MI Ocean Net will host a special event with the GO Project and youth from across Canada. The day will start at 10 a.m. at St. Pauls Church with a discussion on sustainability, followed by a guided tour of the Robin Hood Bay facilities, and a clean up of St. Philips Beach.
On Saturday, July 30, MI Ocean Net will be at the Town Hall in Logy Bay-Middle Cove- Outer Cove at 10 a.m., followed by a cleanup of Middle Cove beach at 11:30 a.m.
MI Ocean Net travels to Arnolds Cove on August 1 for a beach clean up starting at 1:00 p.m. from the towns recreation centre.
All volunteers are encouraged to wear sturdy footwear, pack a lunch, bring water and wear appropriate clothing in case of changing weather conditions.Gloves and bags will be provided.
