SUBJECT: Memorial’s Aboriginal Resource Office celebrating diversity with sharing sessions

The Aboriginal Resource Office on Memorial University’s St. John’s campus will hold a diversity sharing session from 12-2 p.m. on Friday, June 17, in front of the clock tower in recognition of National Aboriginal Day taking place on June 21.
National Aboriginal Day is a day recognizing and celebrating the cultures and contributions of Canada’s aboriginal people.
“I think this is a great opportunity to educate citizens and celebrate aboriginal diversity within our province, and to show appreciation for the beautiful cultural arts that aboriginal people offer,” said Sheila Freake, co-ordinator, Aboriginal Resource Office.
The Aboriginal Resource Office will host a number of special activities, offer food for sale, showcase fantastic entertainment and have a wigwam and a teepee on display. Members and Memorial students from Metis, Inuit, Innu and Mi’kmaq communities will attend to celebrate National Aboriginal Day and share information about their respective cultures.
Everyone is invited to join in the fun. On the menu is bannock, homemade jam, caribou meat pies, Indian tacos, partridge stew and pan-fried cod and char fish. The Memorial University Students’ Union (MUNSU) will also be on hand serving hot dogs.
For entertainment, enjoy the sights and sounds of First Nations and Inuit drummers, fancy shawl dancers and tickets will be sold for a chance to win an Inuit carving.
The event is taking place in partnership with the St. John’s Native Friendship Centre and MUNSU.
In case of inclement weather, the event will take place outside The Landing, third floor of the University Centre.
