SUBJECT: Memorial University win best production at Virtual Worlds conference

A production by Memorial University’s Distance Education, Learning and Teaching Support (DELTS) unit and the Miawpukek First Nation people of Conne River, Newfoundland and Labrador, was recently named the peer selection as Best Production at the 2011 Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education (VWBPE) conference.
Machinima: Muinji’j Becomes a Man was originally a book written by Chief Joe of the Miawpukek First Nations people of Conne River, and was adapted as part of the Stories of Conne River project.
Muinji’j Becomes a Man is now also an interactive story in Second Life – an immersive virtual world. The story was graphically recreated and enhanced using video, sound and narrative. Participants are able to role-play the story’s characters, and engage in associated learning activities that teach traditional
values carried down by the Miawpukek First Nation for generations. From April 11 to June 16, 2011, there were 157 visits to the booth with an average visit time of 41 minutes. Information regarding the project can be found at http://www.storiesofconneriver.ca
The Best Production award was presented to Marlene Brooks, on behalf of the DELTS project team. Ms. Brooks, the project lead for DELTS, has been invited to give additional presentations on the projects at such venues as the University of Delaware Virtual World Conference, Train for Success, Virtual Pioneers, Zest for Tech conference at Frostburg State University and the International Society for Teacher Education (ISTE).
The fourth annual conference ran from March 17-19, and boasted 190 presenters, 40 poster exhibits, or 30-plus machinima submissions – all-occurring in 3D virtual environments. Conference presentations focused on teaching/learning, scholarly work, projects, events, activities and new and innovative tools for virtual education.
