REF NO.: 65

SUBJECT: Memorial University student video project addresses needs of international students

DATE: November 15, 2010

Memorial University of Newfoundland has played an active role in developing and implementing programs and services to support and retain students from all over the world. The International Student Advising Office and the Office of Student Recruitment have recently embarked on a new project with current students that aims to ease student adjustment for newly arriving students by developing pre-orientation videos regarding life at Memorial.
The International Student Video Project (ISVP) addresses the pre-arrival, settlement and integration needs of international students through the production of short videos. These videos provide informative orientation content, reducing discrepancies between student expectations and reality, while at the same time promoting the concepts of a welcoming university community.
Thanks to a Knowledge Mobilization Grant provided by the Atlantic Metropolis Centre, two videos have been produced so far: one on housing (both on and off campus) and the other on the Canadian classroom experience. To celebrate the achievement of the students involved in making the videos, an official launch will be held on Friday, Nov. 19, in The Landing, UC-3018, at 2:30 p.m.
A few words from the funding agency and Dr. Rob Shea, dean of Student Affairs and Services, will be followed by a showing of the completed videos.
