SUBJECT: International music conference at Memorial University featuring Maud Karpeles exhibit

An exhibit featuring a British folk music revivalist who collected folk songs by visiting the bays and towns of Newfoundland during the years 1929-30 will be launched at Memorial University’s St. John’s campus on Tuesday, July 12, at 1:30 p.m.
Dr. Maud Karpeles: A Retrospective of Her Newfoundland Fieldwork, 1929 and 1930, is part of the 2011 World Conference for the International Council of Traditional Music (ICTM) conference taking place at Memorial July 13-19. The exhibit will take place at the Music Resource Centre, room 2026, School of Music (M.O. Morgan Building) on Memorial University’s St. John’s campus.
Dr. Karpeles is recognized as one of the key founders of the British folk revival movement of the early 20th century. Travelling by car, rail, and coastal boat to such regions as Conception Bay, Bay of Exploits, Fortune Bay and Placentia Bay, Dr. Karpeles compiled more than 200 songs from residents of 40 different communities.
The 2011 ICTM conference will be touching down in venues on the St. John’s campus for seven electric days, bringing a kaleidoscope of singers, instrumentalists, dancers and scholars of international calibre with it. A biennial event, the world conference is the leading global venue for the presentation of new research in music and dance.
