SUBJECT: Industry meets academia at MI career fair

Industry and academia came face-to-face for two days at the Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) of Memorial University of Newfoundland during the ninth annual MI career fair.
The career fair, which took place at the Marine Institute’s Ridge Road campus in St. John’s Feb. 9 -10 provided MI students and alumni a chance to discuss their industries and career options with professionals from the ocean and marine sectors. Students and graduates had an opportunity to network with companies from around North America and were encouraged to inquire about work term and full time positions.
“From the perspective of our students and graduates, the 2011 career fair gave them a chance to personally meet with seasoned professionals from their fields. These professionals were able to offer career advice and answer questions about the demands and rewards that come with careers in this sector,” said Glenn Blackwood, executive director, MI. “For the companies who attended the Marine Institute career fair, they had the luxury of meeting a number of well trained and highly qualified students and graduates who are prepared to enter the work force and make an immediate impact.”
Provincial, national and international organizations from the food, naval architecture, marine transportation and aquaculture and ocean technology sectors travelled to the institute for the two-day event. The career fair attracted close to 40 exhibitors and more than 400 visitors, including MI students, Marine Institute graduates and the general public.
Among the current MI students on hand was Michelle Mifflin, who said the career fair offered several openings to make a good first impression with prospective employers.
“I’m hoping to set up my own work term,” said Ms. Mifflin, a first-year ocean instrumentation student at MI. “It’s a good chance to meet people from the companies and talk with them and get a sense of what they’re looking for.”
The MI career fair began Feb. 9 with company and alumni presentations in Hampton Hall in the industry Seminar Room. Industry representatives and Institute alumni had the chance to display their successes during this time. Several visiting businesses offered presentations that highlighted employment opportunities and profiled industry partnerships. The company and alumni presentations continued on Feb. 10.
The career fair exhibition took place on Feb. 10 in the MI gymnasium. Students and graduates met with exhibitors and discussed their company and possible career opportunities.
Kurt Trask of BMT Fleet Technology spoke highly of the MI students in attendance, praising their enthusiasm and interest in the oceans and marine industries.
“We’re taking resumés from a number of students. We’re talking to them about potential work opportunities we have and some of them have a good chance of working with us down the road,” said Mr. Trask, who graduated from the Marine Institute in 2008 with a diploma of technology in marine engineering systems design and is now a marine systems technologist with BMT Fleet
Technology. “All the students we’ve met have been very vocal about trying to secure work with us. They are all very willing to do whatever it takes. We have offices in Vancouver, Victoria and Ottawa, and all the students are telling us it doesn’t matter where the work is, they’re willing to go there.”
The 2011 MI career fair was organized by the Marine Institute’s career fair committee, including co-chairs Melissa Flynn and Bernard Brockerville. Other members of the committee include Kim Thornhill, Alison Highstead, Rhonda McMeekin, Angie Clarke, Beverley Pope, Ann Lynn Anstey and Lisa Emberley.
