Note to editors:

The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame Discovery Days in Health Sciences takes place Friday, May 13, at the Faculty of Medicine, Memorial University. A total of 107 participants from 20 high schools in the province will attend this annual event.
The day starts off with a keynote address by molecular geneticist Dr. Terry-Lynn Young. Her topic is titled “Local students solve sudden death riddle, and save lives.”
Students will participate in a variety of hands-on workshops. In the School of Pharmacy, the high school students will have the opportunity to compound and dispense a lip balm. A workshop on microorganisms in human disease offers an introduction to bacteria, parasites and fungi that cause human disease. At the School for Human Kinetics and Recreation, a workshop on stretching for health and performance will demonstrate how reflexes can be activated or depressed in order to increase flexibility and athletic performance.
Other workshops involve using an electron microscope, and interacting with a computer driven patient simulator. Students can try out techniques used daily in a histology pathology laboratory, or find out what it takes to manage the nursing care of a patient who has just had surgery. There’s also the opportunity to work with DNA and experience life as a respiratory therapist.
Discovery Days in Health Sciences wraps up with a career panel discussion.
