SUBJECT: Third place win for SIFE Memorial

Three days of intense presentations at the SIFE World Cup have wrapped up with a third place win for SIFE Memorial.
Members of the student group were in Berlin, Germany to compete in the 2009 SIFE World Cup Oct 4-6.
SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) is one of the world's largest student organizations, with over 1,400 teams in more than 40 countries. These teams work to create sustainable, socially responsible projects that help to improve their communities. At the World Cup, CEOs and business leaders from around the world will evaluate each team based on their success at creating economic opportunities for others.
This marks the third year that SIFE Memorial has ranked in the top three in this global competition. In 2007, SIFE Memorial was first runner up at the competition in New York City and in 2008 they were named World Cup Champions in Singapore.
For the past four years, Memorial has earned the top national spot and the right to represent Canada in the World Cup.
The team was well-represented at the event, with 24 students representing the 90 member team, Faculty Advisor Lynn Morrissey, acting dean Dale Foster, former Dean Gary Gorman and 15 family members in the audience cheering. Dr. Foster said the competition was an amazing experience. “The team performed with energy and integrity, and everyone from the Memorial family can share in the pride,” she said. “We came third in the world and the team left nothing on the table.”
In Newfoundland, SIFE members and the university community kept abreast of updates via Twitter and Facebook. The final round of competition and the awards ceremony were broadcast live in the Breezeway on Oct. 6.
Dr. Lilly Walker, dean of student affairs and services, was watching the final results came in with students in the Breezeway. “We are enormously proud of the SIFE students. The competition success is outstanding, and placing third in the world is a tremendous accomplishment,” she said. “However, we are most proud of the impact they have on the community and the work they have done to improve the lives of people in our province.”
Egypt emerged as the overall champion and India placed second.
SIFE Memorial is supported by Memorial University of Newfoundland, the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.
