SUBJECT: Faculty of Medicine to host 2010 Canadian Conference on Medical Education

DATE: April 29, 2010

Memorial’s Faculty of Medicine is hosting the 2010 Canadian Conference on Medical Education May 1-5.
Titled, White Coats, Warm Hearts: Integrating Science and Humanism, the event will see more than 1,000 delegates from across Canada and around the world take part. Dr. James Rourke, dean of Memorial’s Faculty of Medicine, said the entire faculty is eagerly awaiting their colleagues’ arrival – some from as far away as Australia.
“I am delighted to welcome our leaders from St. John’s, N.L., to all of Canada and the rest of the world to an exciting week of exploring the leading edges of medical education,” he said. “We will most certainly build many collaborative networks to advance medical education in Canada.”
The conference will take place at the St. John’s Convention Centre, the Sheraton Hotel and Delta Hotel.
Plenary sessions will be focused on hot topics in the medical education field such as Raiders of the Lost Ark: Recovering Humanities in Medicine and Leadership for the 21st Century: Medicine’s Current Challenge.
Medicine will be a workshop based on distributed medical education – when student and instructor are separated by distance and learning takes place via technological teaching tools such as video and the Internet.
“That’s a very important topic for us here in Newfoundland and Labrador because our students have learning experiences in all parts of the province,” he said.
It is the first time Memorial’s Faculty of Medicine is hosting the world-leading conference, and Dr. Rourke said the White Coats, Warm Hearts theme demonstrates the faculty’s ultimate goal: improving the lives of people.
