SUBJECT: Faculty of Education researchers take home international award

Dr. Timothy Seifert and Oana Radu’s work, titled Mathematical Intimacy within Blended and Face-to-Face Learning Environments, was awarded the European Distance and E-learning Network (EDEN)’s Best Research Paper Award on June 12 at the organization’s annual conference in Valencia, Spain.
EDEN, established in 1991, is an international educational association open to institutions and individuals dealing with e-learning, open and distance education. This year’s conference theme was Media Inspirations for Learning: What Makes the impact?
The paper by Dr. Seifert, associate dean of graduate programs in the Faculty of Education, and Ms. Radu, a doctoral student focusing on mathematical education, was selected among 50 submissions evaluated against high standard criteria.
Their paper emphasized an elaborated concept of learning that covers cognitive as well as motivational aspects, an emphasis on innovative use of media, and a critical reflection on the effects of media on learning mathematics in different learning environments.
This is Dr. Seifert’s second consecutive year receiving this accolade. He also received last year’s Best Research Paper Award at EDEN for his work with Dr. Bruce Sheppard and Ann-Marie Vaughan for their paper Examining the Effectiveness of Distance Education: Results from Multi-level Modeling.
