News Release
REF NO.: 22
SUBJECT: Engineering students learn about leadership at first annual Student LIFE Forum
DATE: September 25, 2009
On Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, engineering students and invited guests will be at the Delta Hotel and Conference Centre in St. John’s for the first annual Student LIFE Forum 2009.
The forum is sponsored by the Angus Bruneau Student LIFE Program, first established by a $1-million donation by Drs. Angus and Jean Bruneau. The fund is meant to encourage and support student leadership and innovation in engineering education, research and community service.
The Angus Bruneau Student LIFE Program provides funding for student-led initiatives that significantly enhance the experience of students in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University, and supports initiatives that would not normally be funded through the faculty’s operating budget.
The donation provides financial awards on a matching basis such that students are required to raise some portion of the funds needed for the project. In addition to financial awards, the Angus Bruneau Student LIFE Program would also sponsor an annual leadership and innovation forum.
Engineering students at all stages of their respective programs will participate in this day of inspiration and learning. In addition to Drs. Angus and Jean Bruneau, some of the forum’s guest speakers include Earl Ludlow, who will discuss the challenges and successes he has experienced in his position as CEO of Newfoundland Power, and Brendan Brothers, a graduate of Memorial’s engineering program and one of Verafin’s founding owners. Mr. Brothers will speak about the company’s humble beginnings in the engineering building to its current position as a North American leader in fraud detection software.
Media are invited to drop by.
