SUBJECT: Student scholarships set to benefit from book sale

More than 20,000 books will be sold later this week to help raise money for scholarships for students at Memorial University.
The St. John’s Club of the Canadian Federation of University Women will hold its annual gigantic book sale in the capital city on Friday, April 24, and Saturday, April 25.
The organization – the largest of its kind in Atlantic Canada – is anticipating a steady stream for the two-day fundraiser, which will be held at the St. John’s Arts and Culture Centre.
Since February 2009 members have been collecting, sorting and pricing books for the sale, which regularly attracts hundreds of people. All items will be reasonably priced with the latest novel going for just $5.
All categories of fiction and non-fiction including children's books will be available on the main concourse of the centre. On the third floor, one room will be filled with collectibles and Newfoundland and Labrador books, while another will have bargain books being sold by the bagful for a toonie.
Proceeds from the sale will ensure the club continues a longstanding tradition of providing funding for a series of scholarships to Memorial as well as conduct other educational projects for the 2010-11 year.
Currently, the CFUW provides funding for two annual bursaries for women at Memorial, valued at $1,500 each.
The club also funds four scholarships valued at $2,000 each awarded to women in the: masters program in the Department of Women’s Studies; the masters or doctoral program in the Faculty of Education; the third- or fourth-year undergraduate level in the Faculty of Arts; and the third- or fourth-year undergraduate level of Physical Education in the School of Human Kinetics and Recreation.
As well, the organization funds two scholarships, valued at $1,000 each, awarded to women attending the Marine Institute and the College of the North Atlantic whose studies are leading to a career in a non-traditional working area for women.
It also awards a scholarship valued at $1,000 for a woman in the Early Childhood Education Program at the college.
Additionally, the CFUW will also provide Memorial’s Campus Food Bank with a $1,000 donation this year, and continue funding for the club’s Newfoundland Art Posters in Schools Project in various areas of the province. They are also sponsoring three primary school children in Kibera, Nairobi, one of the poorest regions in Africa.
