SUBJECT: PSA: Biology celebrates 200th anniversary of the birth of Darwin

DATE: February 11, 2009

On Feb. 12, the Memorial University’s Department of Biology will honour a very special anniversary - the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin, the father of evolution. Darwin was the first to suggest all species of life evolved over time through a process called natural selection. This theory would go on to become the foundation of all biology.
This year also marks the 150th anniversary of the publication of his book, On the Origin of Species, which established evolution as the explanation for diversification in nature.
Dr. Steve Carr, a professor of biology, is a resident expert on the life and works of Darwin. He is available for media interviews Wednesday, Feb. 11 or Thursday, Feb.12 to discuss the continuing importance of Darwin and his theories today.
