SUBJECT: Ocean Expert to speak at Ocean Innovation Conference

Ocean Innovation 2008, in conjunction with the City of St. John’s, is pleased to announce a Sunday afternoon public lecture by Dr. John Delaney, professor of Oceanography at the University of Washington and the first holder of the Jerome M. Paros Endowed Chair in Sensor Networks.
The lecture will take place on Sunday, Oct. 19 from 2:30 p.m. – 4 .p.m. at the Delta Hotel and Conference Centre in Salon E and F.
When one considers that two-thirds of the blue-green planet is blue, it is astonishing to think that so little is known about the ocean. Dr. John Delaney is using his ground breaking research on ocean observations systems to remedy this and provide insight into what lies beneath and how it affects our everyday lives.
His lecture, titled Connecting to the Universe below the Sea, will focus on the new technologies being employed to study the ocean realm. These interactive, Internet-based sensor-robot networks are a next-generation approach to enabling long-term, real time surveillance of remote, fascinating and dangerous ocean processes that are central to the habitability of our planet. One of the niche features of this multibillion dollar project is its ability to bring the ocean live to home computers, school science classes and to the World Wide Web for all to see.
With over 40 years experience studying the ocean, Dr. Delaney has spent more time in a submarine than any other oceanographer on earth. As a seagoing oceanographer, Delaney has served as chief scientist on more than 40 oceanographic research cruises, many of which have included the deep submergence vehicle Alvin and the remotely operated vehicle Jason. In September 2005, he co-led the VISIONS’05 research expedition, which successfully broadcast the first-ever live, high-definition video from the seafloor.
During the presentation, attendees can enter a draw to win an overnight stay at the Delta, complete with dinner and breakfast. Refreshments will also be served after the lecture at which time GRI Simulations, a developer of computer based applications for the marine sector, will be on-hand conducting demonstrations using remotely operating vehicle simulators.
