SUBJECT: Memorial University students have great success in Panama

DATE: February 19, 2009

Seven students from Memorial University are now in Panama representing Canada with Global Vision's Junior Team Canada. They are there to promote trade between the two countries. Through this experience they have grown both personally and professionally. As JTC Ambassadors for Newfoundland and Labrador, the students have represented the province while gathering key contacts, and market and cultural intelligence for companies and organizations in order to further promote Canada-Americas business relations. In addition, the ambassadors will focus on the importance of corporate and social responsibility and meet with Canadian companies that are operating in Panama.
Key agenda items in Panama have included meetings with the First Lady of Panama, the Canadian Ambassador to Panama, senior trade commissioners, and the chief negotiator of the Free Trade Agreement. The students have also visited the Panama Canal, the Colon Free Trade Zone and the Smithsonian Research Facility.

About the Mission
In a speech marking the 10th anniversary of the Canada-Chile Free Trade Agreement, Prime Minister Stephen Harper declared that reviving and expanding Canadian political and economic engagement in the Americas is a major foreign policy goal of Canada’s new government. “We are a country of the Americas,” Prime Minister Harper said. “Re-engagement in our hemisphere is a critical international priority for our government. Canada is committed to playing a bigger role in the Americas and to doing so for the long term.”
