SUBJECT: Memorial University researcher chairs symposium on hemostasis

The Second Eastern Canadian Symposium on Hemostasis, chaired by Dr. Mary-Frances Scully, Faculty of Medicine, is taking place today at the Delta Hotel and Conference Centre in St. John’s. The focus of the symposium is on blood disorders highly prevalent in Newfoundland and Labrador. This symposium is bringing together local, national and international researchers in the area of blood disorders.
Hemostasis is the scientific term used for clotting and bleeding. Heart attack, strokes, some forms of dementia and clots in the lung and legs are very common, affecting the majority of patients in the province. Dr. Scully said thrombosis is the commonest complication and limiting factor in cancer therapy apart from psychological distress.
Some of the prominent speakers include Dr. Dougald Monroe, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who will present a session on control mechanisms for blood coagulation. Dr. David Lillicrap, Queen’s University, will talk about gene therapy in hemophilia. Dr. Sara Israels, University of Manitoba, will address the area of pediatric hematology and how to assess platelet function. And, Dr. Margaret Rand, Hospital for Sick children in Toronto, will talk about bleeding scores in hemophilia.
