SUBJECT: Memorial University pleased with results of CareerSearch 2008

Memorial University of Newfoundland is pleased with the results of CareerSearch 2008, a report released by the provincial government providing information on the transition of graduates from post-secondary institutions into the labour market.
According to CareerSearch 2008, Memorial graduates are very satisfied with the education they received and have been extremely successful in finding high-paying, full-time employment directly related to their area of study.
“This is great news for our alumni and for current and future Memorial students,” said Dr. Eddy Campbell, acting president, Memorial University. “This report supports our belief that Memorial provides the skills and experience necessary for students to gain well-paying, meaningful employment after graduation.”
CareerSearch 2008 statistics show that Memorial graduates have been very successful in finding employment that is relevant to their field of study with 90.8 per cent of master’s graduates and 81.4 per cent of undergraduates securing employment related to the training they received at Memorial. The Provincial Government report also shows that Memorial graduates are earning above average wages once they enter the workforce, with 69.1 per cent of undergrads and 93.5 per cent of master’s graduates reporting earnings in the high or very high wage range.
Both master’s graduates and undergraduates expressed very high rates of satisfaction with 92.5 and 94.9 per cent respectively reporting being satisfied with their investment of time for class and study at Memorial.
“These numbers show that Memorial students continue to view their experience at Memorial very favourably and adds further weight to the conditions of our own studies.” said Dr. Campbell.
Results of the survey also show that considerably fewer undergraduate and master’s students are accessing student aid programs compared to 2002. In 2006, 14 per cent of master’s graduates and 47 per cent of undergraduates had student loans compared to 2002 figures of 19.4 and 59.9 per cent respectively.
“The news that Memorial students are becoming less reliant on student aid is welcome. Overall, Memorial delivers a first-class educational experience at very affordable price,” said Dr. Campbell. “After graduation, students are well positioned to enter the workforce without being overburdened with high debt loads.”
CareerSearch 2008 reports the labour market outcomes for graduates of 2006 post-secondary programs. The data was collected by Newfoundland and Labrador Statistics Agency from May to September 2008. CareerSearch will be distributed to all high schools, post-secondary institutions and those involved in providing career counseling in the province.
