SUBJECT: Memorial University number one in research growth

Memorial’s research income grew by more than 116 per cent between 2002 and 2007.
Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities List 2008 has been released and Memorial ranked first in the universities with medical/doctoral programs for research income growth, a score that’s more than double the category average of about 50 per cent growth.
According to Research Infosource Inc., which releases the lists each year, Memorial spent $75 million on research in 2007 (actual revenues were more than $89 million). This is up from $35 million of expenditure in 2002. Research Infosource data comes from the Canadian Association of University Business Offices, which surveys Canadian universities for research money spent in each fiscal year.
Of the $89 million dollars in external research revenue awarded to Memorial researchers in 2007, $9.2 million was awarded from the Canada Foundation for Innovation, nearly $8 million from the Atlantic Innovation Fund, about $2.5 million from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council,
more than $8.2 million from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, and $4.8 million from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. This funding has been used for a diverse range of projects including solving the mystery of some genetic diseases, improving offshore oil development, explaining infant amnesia, seabed imaging and studying the connection between aging and memory.
“We made research a priority at Memorial several years ago and we’ve delivered on that promise,” said Dr. Ray Gosine, vice-president (research), pro tempore. “Research is essential to our growth as a university in Canada. We are extremely proud that our research is making a difference in people’s lives, that it enjoys an excellent international reputation, and that it has local and global significance and impact.”
More than 50 per cent of all the research and development undertaken in Newfoundland and Labrador is performed by researchers at Memorial University. It is the largest research organization in the province.
Together, Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities posted a 3.5 per cent growth in their total sponsored research income in fiscal 2007. Total research income reached $5.7 billion, up from $5.5 billion in fiscal 2006. Memorial will be featured in an upcoming issue of the National Post and the Ottawa Citizen in the Canada's Innovation Leaders supplement - Spotlight on University Growth.
