DATE: June 19, 2009

The Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland (MI) will host its 2009 graduation on Friday, June 19. Graduates will receive their advanced diplomas, diplomas and certificates during a ceremony in the MI gymnasium, beginning at 2 p.m.
“This is a day our graduates have been working toward for a long time and we want to make it a day they will never forget,” said Glenn Blackwood, executive director, Marine Institute. “MI graduates are the future of the oceans and marine industries in our province and their skills are always in high demand. With the training they have received at the Marine Institute, they now have the ability to maximize their potential in these industries and help grow an emerging sector in Newfoundland and Labrador.”
Blackwood will deliver the report of the executive director at the ceremony. Other speakers include Dr. Eddy Campbell, acting president and vice-chancellor, Memorial University, and the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.
A presentation of the Governor General’s Academic Medal is also scheduled, as is the students’ address, performed this year by James Hayes, a graduate who will receive a diploma of technology in marine engineering.
A reception in the MI cafeteria will follow Friday’s graduation ceremony.
MI will release Annual Review 2008-09 prior to graduation, a publication that provides insight into the programs, applied research and training the Marine Institute makes available in Newfoundland and Labrador and across the world. Annual Review 2008-09 is also available online at www.mi.mun.ca/annualreview.
A live webcast of the graduation will be available at www.mi.mun.ca/graduation and can also be viewed on a continuous basis after the ceremony has ended. This marks the first time MI has made the graduation ceremony available online.
