Artist Angela Antle recently spent three days at Ecole Notre-Dame-du-Cap with Grade 4 and 5 Francophone students to work on a storytelling/journalism project in conjunction with Shorelines, a new creative exchange project between Newfoundland and Labrador and Ireland.
Ms. Antle worked with students to design and record interviews with adults in the community that looked at what has changed in the community over the years and what has changed for the francophone community, in particular. Students also researched local ghost stories which the artist recorded, too. The interviews and stories will be edited into a podcast available on the Shorelines website which is currently under construction. It is hoped that a similar project will be conducted with Gaelic-speaking students in Tralee.
Last November, Level One French immersion students at Corner Brook Regional High toured the Port au Port and worked with artist, Pierre LeBlanc, to record their impressions in word and image. This project may be viewed at: www.swgc.mun.ca/shorelines_cbhigh.
Shorelines is a multi-faceted project that brings together choreographers, visual artists specializing in the moving image, and sound artists to develop work grounded in the communities of the Port au Port and the West Coast of Ireland. The artwork will form an internationally touring exhibition which will be shown at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College Art Gallery in February/March 2010. Canadian artists represented in the project are: Angela Antle, Anne Troake and Pierre LeBlanc. We gratefully acknowledge the support of Canada Council for the Arts, Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council, and the Centre for Environmental Excellence.
