SUBJECT: Grenfell: Grenfell College looking forward to working with new board chair

Grenfell College is eager to begin working with the new chair of Memorial’s Board of Regents.
St. John’s lawyer Robert Simmonds was appointed chair earlier this month by Joan Burke, minister of Education.
“We look forward to meeting with him to provide him with information and background on the Grenfell College governance issue so that he can get up to speed on the matter,” said Holly Pike, acting principal of Grenfell. “The passing of the legislation that will increase Grenfell’s autonomy within the Memorial University system is integral to Grenfell’s future growth and expansion.”
Grenfell College recently submitted its strategic plan for the next five years to the University Planning and Budget Committee and has a clear vision of its goals for the future.
“The College’s Senior Planning Group is currently preparing a detailed work plan in support of our strategic plan. We are also well on the road with respect to planning the structural changes and space requirements that will be necessitated by the new legislation,” said Dr. Pike. “We are developing cost estimates and time lines for implementing the new governance structure.”
In April 2007, the provincial government released an independent report which recommended two universities within one Memorial University system. Known as “option 1a,” this system would be presided over by one Board of Regents, with each university having its own senate, budget and executive.
“When the province moves forward with its commitment to option 1a, it will enable the board to begin the search process for a new president for the Corner Brook campus,” said Dr. Pike. “Everyone at Grenfell is ready to work with Mr. Simmonds and the board to ensure the Corner Brook campus is successful in its future endeavours.”
