When & Where: Thursday, April 23 7:00pm @ Greenwood Suites (48 West St), Corner Brook When & Where: Friday, April 24 7:00pm @ The Fluvarium (5 Nagle’s Place), St Johns St Johns – Local environmental groups and public are gearing up for two events featuring award-winning author, Herb Hammond to launch his latest book, Maintaining Whole Systems on Earth’s Crown: Ecosystem-based Conservation Planning in the Boreal Forest. These events are part of a cross-Canada book tour and will be held on Thursday, April 23 7:00pm at Greenwood Suites in Corner Brook and Friday, April 24 7:00pm at The Fluvarium in St Johns.
Herb Hammond is a forest ecologist, the pioneer of ecosystem-based conservation planning and author of the award winning book, Seeing The Forest Among the Trees. In his thought-provoking and inspiring presentation, Herb Hammond will introduce the philosophy, principles and practice of ecosystem-based conservation planning as both a means to achieving ecologically responsible land management and as a broader approach to tackling the many environmental challenges facing us today.
“The circumpolar boreal forest is Earth’s largest carbon sink. However, that is changing fast. Logging in Canada’s boreal forest alone annually releases as much carbon as all of the cars in Canada. We know relatively little about these boreal forests that we are rapidly changing, and there are many species in them that we have yet to identify. We don’t know what we are losing. We need to change our way of thinking and relating to the boreal forest—to Earth. It is a matter of survival”, commented Hammond.
Audience members will be treated to an informative and a visually beautiful slideshow of boreal forests, one of the most important forest ecosystems on the planet.
In January 2007, the Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society launched the Coalition for Sustainable Forests of Newfoundland and Labrador. “We feel blessed to have such a seminal icon of ecosystem-based planning as Herb Hammond visiting our province in these critical times” noted Ian Goudie, Coordinator of CSFnl.
The Corner Brook and St Johns events are part of a cross-Canada book tour with events in twelve cities and towns including Edmonton, Saskatoon, Whitehorse, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Halifax, Nelson, Victoria, and Vancouver. In Toronto, Herb Hammond will be joined by a panel of experts to talk about Canada’s Boreal forests.
Hosts of the event are Coalition For Sustainable Forest Management and CPAWS Newfoundland.
