SUBJECT: Grenfell: Are you ready to fall for Grenfell?

DATE: October 9, 2008

The Grenfell community is gearing up once again for its annual “I Fell for Grenfell” celebration.
The celebration is part of Memorial University’s I Love MUNdays festivities, which are taking place Oct. 21-25 this year.
I Fell for Grenfell is an opportunity for Grenfell students, faculty and staff to recognize the sense of community that exists on the Corner Brook campus. Events will range from fun and exciting to thought provoking and socially significant.
On the morning of Tuesday, Oct. 21, students will be treated to a healthy brown bag breakfast. The day continues with the start of “Pay It Forward,” an opportunity for everyone to do something nice for someone else, and then they are asked to “pay it forward”. These good deeds will continue all week. Also on Tuesday, folklore professor Dr. Doreen Klassen will deliver a talk titled “’I wanted a life of my own’: Creating a Single woman Mennonite Identity in Mexico,” as part of the Grenfell Speaker Series. The talk will take place at 12:30 p.m. in FA223 (Fine Arts lecture theatre). A martial arts session, Qi Gong, will follow at 1:30 p.m. in the Grenfell gym.
The official launch of I Fell for Grenfell will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 22, just before the annual Campus Dash, a 2 km/1 km run/walk for the Grenfell community and the general public. There’ll be cake, prizes and a whole lot of fun. Also on Wednesday will be the first day of “Fall Advising Daze,” 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in the Crossroads of the Arts and Science Building. This is an opportunity for students to sit down with academic advisers, find out what requirements they need to fill for completion of their degrees and pick out courses for the winter semester. Other events on Wednesday include a calligraphy class, 10 a.m., in AS379, the Psychology Society’s I Fell for Grenfell Bake Sale, 10 a.m. until supplies last, just outside AS348, and a belly dancing class, 7:30 p.m. in the Grenfell gym.
On Thursday, Oct. 23, Fall Advising Daze continues. Healthy Bodies/Healthy Minds, a health fair delivered by Western Regional School of Nursing, will take place in the GCSU food court, 9:30-11:30 a.m. The much-anticipated “Pie the Prof” will take place in the GCSU food court, 12:30 p.m.-2 p.m. This year proceeds will go to the on-campus food bank and the John Ashton Bursary Fund. And the day will draw to a close with the Sudoku Challenge, 8 p.m. in AS378, and the annual International Night, being held in the GCSU food court, 6:30-8:30 p.m. International Night showcases the different nationalities and cultures that are represented in the Grenfell community. Students, faculty and staff from other nations are encouraged to dress in their national dress, give a brief description of their countries and prepare a dish from their home countries. Members of the public and the campus get a chance to sample different cuisines while viewing artworks and symbolic pieces as well as listening to the fusion of international sounds and music.
On Friday, Oct. 24, Grenfell’s annual “Sports Day,” a madcap event filled with ridiculous sporting challenges (hula-hoop, anyone?) gets underway at 3:30 p.m. in the Grenfell gym. Come see faculty and staff go head to head with students as they vie for the coveted wacky trophy.
Finally, on Saturday, Oct. 25, the second annual Student Leadership Conference gets underway at 9:30 at the Pepsi Centre, and Western Regional School of Nursing will hold its annual Teddy Bear Clinic in FA224 of the Fine Arts Building, 12-3 p.m. Get the kids to bring Teddy along for a check-up, and enjoy a snack and activities while you’re there.
