SUBJECT: Faculty of Business announces Alumni and Entrepreneur of the Year

The Faculty of Business at Memorial University is proud to announce the 2008 Alumni Honour Award and the 2009 Newfoundland and Labrador Entrepreneur of the Year Award recipients. Both awards will be handed out at the 25th annual Partners celebration on April 2, an event that honours leaders in the local business community and partners of the Faculty of Business.
S. Jane Rowe, executive vice president, Executive Offices, Scotiabank, and honours graduate of the bachelor of commerce class of 1981 will receive the 2008 Alumni Honour Award in recognition of her ongoing support of the Faculty of Business. Although living and working in Toronto, Ms. Rowe maintains strong ties with the Faculty of Business as a member of the advisory board.
Charlie Oliver, B.Comm.(’74), will receive the Gardiner Centre’s 2008 Newfoundland and Labrador Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Mr. Oliver is the CEO of Martek Morgan Finch Inc. and has been involved with the establishment of more than 90 new businesses in Newfoundland over the course of his career.
Deloitte & Touche LLP, the provincial Department of Human Resources Labour and Employment and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP will also be recognized at the event for their commitment to hiring co-op students.
Dr. Gary Gorman, dean of the Faculty of Business Administration, is looking forward to recognizing these individuals and groups. “The Faculty of Business is fortunate to have such strong relationships with the local business community, and Partners is an opportunity to celebrate while also taking the time to recognize special individuals and groups who are making a difference within our faculty and community,” he said.
Partners Dinner takes place on April 2 at the Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland. The reception starts at 4:30 p.m., followed by the ceremony at 6 p.m. Tickets are available by contacting Wanda Whelan, at 737-2182 or wwhelan@mun.ca.

S. Jane Rowe
B.Comm.(Hons.)'81, MBA'82 (York University)
The 2008 Alumni Honour Award recipient, S. Jane Rowe was born and raised in Newfoundland. She received her bachelor of commerce (honours) degree from Memorial University in 1981. She began working with Scotiabank in 1987 and progressed through a variety of positions of increased responsibility within the Scotiabank Group. She is now the executive vice-president, Executive Offices, where her responsibilities include leading a number of strategic and industry initiatives on behalf of the Scotiabank Group of Companies.
Ms. Rowe also holds a master of business administration degree from York University in Ontario. Ms. Rowe sits on the board of directors for Sierra Wireless Corporation, a public corporation listed on both TSX and Nasdaq exchanges, and is an advisory board member for Memorial’s Faculty of Business and international advisory board member for York University’s Schulich School of Business.
Charlie Oliver
B.Comm.(’74), CCIM
The 2009 Gardiner Centre Newfoundland and Labrador Entrepreneur of the Year, Charlie Oliver, has been involved in the real estate industry for over 25 years. In 1981, he founded Consult Associates Ltd. which provided consultancy advice to a multitude of developers and realtors. In 1982, he created Martek Incorporated, the predecessor to Martek Morgan Finch Incorporated, which has grown to be the largest and most successful full service commercial real estate company in the province. Throughout his career, Mr. Oliver has maintained continuous, significant involvement and influence in the St. John's real estate market. Over his 25 years in business, Mr. Oliver has been a key deal maker on hundreds of multi-million dollar deals in all aspects of investment grade real estate.
Over the years, Mr. Oliver has been involved in the creation of in excess of 90 companies that have spanned a variety of business sectors from tire re-treading to a bookstore, restaurants to offshore supply, vitamin supply to cosmetics to cover but a few. The mix of experience has garnered an appreciation of the differences and even the similarities amongst this wide array of businesses.
Mr. Oliver has just completed a six-year term on the National Board of the Canadian Condominium Institute (CCI), a national organization that works with all stakeholders in the condominium industry to advance education, awareness and condominium living in general.
Mr. Oliver earned his business degree from Memorial University in 1974 and the prestigious CCIM (certified commercial investment membership) designation in 1988. This designation provided significantly advanced education and training in commercial and investment real estate.
