SUBJECT: DELT and School of Music to showcase award-winning music theory project

Memorial’s Distance Education and Learning Technologies (DELT) and School of Music are hosting a spotlight event that will showcase and demonstrate their award-winning collaborative music theory project on Wednesday, Oct. 15.
The School of Music and DELT received a national award for innovation in learning technology at this year’s Canadian Network for Innovation in Education (CNIE) conference. The national award is presented for demonstrating a unique use of learning technologies to change learning systems.
“As a result of this project, potential music students from across the province and nationally can complete a major part of their admissions screening from virtually anywhere,” said Ann Marie Vaughan, director, DELT. “We were privileged to have partnered with the School of Music in making this technology a virtual reality for their students.”
Funded by Inukshuk Wireless, the project showcases the use of multimedia and instructional design with faculty members to develop an innovative learning solution.
The new music theory testing application, which is administered online, allows potential students to prepare and drill in advance of their diagnostic admissions examinations, making it a true convenience for students living in rural communities of the province or country. The application’s flexibility will make it useful not only for online testing, but for preparatory and remedial teaching.
“This online application has immense value to our students and instructors in relation to the enrollment process,” said Dr. Tom Gordon, director, School of Music. “Thanks to our partnership with DELT, we have dramatically sped up the assessment process and are able to get results to students in a fraction of the time.”
A presentation of the project and demonstration of the technology will be given by Kjellrun Hestekin, School of Music; Stephen Keats, multimedia specialist, DELT; and Gerry Porter, lead multimedia specialist, DELT.
The event will take place from 9:30 – 11 a.m., in Petro Canada Hall, School of Music, Memorial University. A short reception with refreshments will take place prior to the presentation.
