SUBJECT: The Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University to hold Graduation, Friday, June 13, at 2 p.m

            The Fisheries and Marine Institute’s 2008 graduation ceremonies will take place at the Marine Institute on June 13, 2008, at 2 p.m. The media are invited to attend. 
            This year’s ceremonies will feature guest speaker Dr. Robert Ballard. Dr. Ballard is an oceanographer most noted for his work in underwater archaeology. He is most famous for the discoveries of the wrecks of the RMS Titanic in 1985, the battleship Bismarck in 1989, and the wreck of the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown in 1998. Most recently he discovered the wreck of John F. Kennedy's PT-109 in 2002. Dr. Ballard is currently the director of the Institute for Archeological Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island. He will also be on hand at the Marine Institute at 12 p.m. on Friday to officially open the Immersion Presents Theatre.
            Other speakers include Charlene Johnson, provincial minister of environment and conservation, Dr. Eddy Campbell, president and vice-chancellor, Memorial University, Glenn Blackwood, executive director, Marine Institute, and a student address by nautical science graduate and recipient of the Company of Master Mariners of Canada Capt. Baugh Scholarship, David Anderson.
            About 160 diplomas, certificates, and advanced diplomas will be awarded during the ceremony.
            Certificates, diplomas and advanced diplomas will be presented in the following disciplines: sustainable aquaculture, integrated coastal and ocean management, food safety, water quality, marine diesel mechanic, bridge watch, offshore structural steel/plate fitter, marine engineering, marine environmental, marine engineering systems design, nautical science, food technology, and naval architecture. Graduates of the bachelor of technology and bachelor of maritime studies received their degrees at Memorial University’s convocation on May 29.
            The graduation ceremony will be broadcast on Rogers Television on Tuesday, June 24, at 8 p.m. in Corner Brook, Gander and Grand-Falls Windsor and on Thursday, July 3, at 9 p.m. in St. John’s.
            The Marine Institute will hold a reception following the graduation ceremony.
