SUBJECT: PSA: A marvelous country to paint

Memorial University alumni and friends are invited to share an evening together with fellow alumna Crystal Parsons as she offers us A Marvellous Country to Paint, her presentation of one of Canada’s foremost painters, Robert Pilot. The event takes place on Tuesday, April 15, in the Dalhousie Art Gallery. Ms. Parsons will also provide a brief overview of the William Hind exhibition on display at the gallery.

Background
Robert Pilot, the stepson of renowned artist Maurice Cullen, was born in St. John's, in 1898. He followed in his stepfather's footsteps painting landscapes which gained him recognition; he was one of only three artists chosen by A.Y. Jackson to exhibit as a guest alongside the Group of Seven at their first exhibition. He went on to become a member, and later president, of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, and his work has been exhibited around the world.
Born in St. John's, NL, Ms. Parsons currently lives and works in Ottawa as an independent curator, researcher, writer and instructor of art history at Algonquin College. She has a bachelor of commerce co-op (2001) from MUN and a master’s of Canadian art history (2006) from Carleton University.
Her exhibition, Maurice Cullen and His Circle, appeared at the National Gallery of Canada and will tour across the country in 2009. The exhibition features the works of Newfoundland-born artists Maurice Cullen and Robert Pilot along with a number of their contemporaries.
