SUBJECT: Nominations being accepted for MUN Volunteer Day 2008

Memorial University of Newfoundland will recognize the volunteer efforts of its own during a special ceremony next month, but first it’s looking for a few good candidates to acknowledge.
Nominations are currently being accepted for the 22nd Annual MUN Volunteer Day, which will take place on March 26, 2008.
Organized by the Student Volunteer Bureau (SVB), the awards allows both community and campus organizations to recognize publicly the efforts of their volunteers. Students, student groups, residences and faculty staff members will be presented with awards.
“Recognizing the valuable contributions of individuals and groups here at Memorial is vastly important,” said Rhonda Pittman, co-ordinator of the SVB. “These people give freely of their time to take action and improve our community, both on and off campus. We know that as post-secondary students, as faculty and as staff, time is a precious commodity and something that is greatly valued. These people are selfless in giving themselves to a worthwhile cause and that should be publicly commended.”
Ms. Pittman said the ceremony isn’t just about handing out awards – it’s about highlighting the efforts Memorial’s own make to society – from volunteering with non-profit groups to helping out in their communities to giving up some of their time with an event happening at the university.
During MUN Volunteer Day 2008, volunteers will be recognized in a variety of categories including volunteer students, staff and faculty, and residences of the year, as well as volunteer centre of the year and volunteer club or society. During the ceremony, the David Kirkland Student Leadership Award and the Glenn Roy Blundon Award will also be awarded.

“We encourage community groups and community members to nominate a Memorial student, faculty or staff member or a recognized group from Memorial that volunteer and do great work in the community,” said Ms. Pittman.
“This is a great way for a not-for-profit group who might not necessarily have the financial means to recognize their volunteers formally to get them the exposure and recognition they deserve. In the past we have had recipients of these awards who were heavily involved not only with campus organizations, but who volunteered locally, nationally and internationally.”
Nominations are being accepted until Feb. 29, 2008. Nomination forms can be dropped off at the Student Volunteer Bureau Office, located in room UC-4001 of the Smallwood Centre on Memorial’s St. John’s campus, or they can be e-mailed to svb@mun.ca or faxed to (709) 737-2437.
