SUBJECT: Memorial University and the College of the North Atlantic to host national Student Affairs and Services conference

Memorial University, in conjunction with the College of the North Atlantic, will host the annual conference for the Canadian Association of College and University Student Services (CACUSS), June 22-25, 2008.
The national conference, titled Imagine…, will focus on the themes of assisting in the learning process, fostering global citizenship and empowering student voices. The 150 workshops and poster presentations will provide over 600 student services professionals the opportunity to collaborate, to inspire creativity and to explore integrated elements of student development. A few topics the conference will explore are reducing risk on-campus, aboriginal students in post-secondary education, and social media and the affects on the learning process.
The interactive pre-conference workshop, facilitated by Dr. Richard P. Keeling, author of Learning Reconsidered, and his associate Dr. Rick Underhile, will provide theoretical and practical insight on collaboration within the context of Student Affairs.
Environmentalist, activist, and leader of the Green Party of Canada, Elizabeth May, will discuss in her keynote address how active participation locally, nationally and globally can make effective global citizens. Outdoor adventurer, educator, and motivational speaker TA Loeffler will lead a panel discussion with students to explore the diversity of learning in college and university education and beyond. Opening keynote, well known writer and actor Andy Jones, will welcome delegates to the province and entertain us with his wit and Newfoundland humor.
“CACUSS 2008 is a time to expand our capabilities for facilitating the learning and development of our students,” said Dr. Lilly Walker, Dean, Student Affairs and Services, Memorial University, and conference chair. “It is a time for honing our skills for preparing students to be engaged and empowered citizens of the world. It is a time to practice the collaboration-building skills that allow us partner with other institutions and throughout our own institutions to better serve students. It is a time to imagine all that we can be.”
CACUSS is a professional bilingual association representing and serving those individuals who work in Canadian post-secondary institutions in Student Affairs and Services.

Biographical Notes:
Richard P. Keeling, MD, leads Keeling and Associates, LLC, a strategic consulting practice in higher education. Dr. Keeling co-founded the International Center for Student Success and Institutional Accountability (ICSSIA), serves on the Board of Directors of the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS), is Senior Fellow for the National Center for Science and Civic Engagement, and edited both Learning Reconsidered and Learning Reconsidered II. Dr. Keeling is one of the authors of Assessment Reconsidered: Institutional Effectiveness for Student Success, a publication recently released by ICSSIA. He has been the author of more than 150 published articles, chapters, monographs, and books.
Before creating Keeling and Associates, he was both a tenured faculty member and a senior student affairs administrator at the University of Virginia and the University of Wisconsin-Madison; for 20 years, Dr. Keeling directed comprehensive campus health programs and services, developed collaborative programs with academic departments and faculty, and explored innovative approaches to student learning. He has been president of four professional organizations and served as editor, for two terms, of the Journal of American College Health. He has received the highest awards of both the American College Health Association (ACHA) and the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA).
Dr. Keeling took his bachelor's degree in English with highest honors from the University of Virginia and received his MD from Tufts University School of Medicine; he completed residency in internal medicine and fellowship in hematology.
