SUBJECT: Marine Institute students receive over $81,000 in scholarships

Students of the Fisheries and Marine Institute were awarded for their academic excellence and leadership skills at the annual fall scholarship presentation held on Wednesday, Nov. 21. Thanks to the generosity of local and national businesses, organizations and individuals, 63 students enrolled at the institute received scholarships valued at over $81,000.
Glenn Blackwood, executive director of the Marine Institute, was pleased to announce that the semi-annual scholarship program had expanded again this year. “One of our key priorities here at the Marine Institute is to recruit and retain a group of remarkably talented students and to support them in ways that allows them to reach their highest potential,” he said. “Our scholarship program is one example of how we are doing that.”
The newly added scholarships include the Andrew Baker Memorial Scholarship, Fry Family Foundation Leadership Scholarships, Gerald Pye Memorial Scholarships and the Nautical Science Society Scholarship.
“We are very grateful for the support provided by our donors,” added Mr. Blackwood. “They continue to recognize the critical need to provide student support and believe that fostering leadership in our students is the first step in creating a highly skilled and educated workforce.”
Joan Burke, minister of education, was also on hand to address the award-winning students and present the provincial government’s Centenary Scholarships. “It is wonderful to see the talent, knowledge and creativity clearly demonstrated in the students of the Marine Institute,” said Minister Burke. “The high caliber of our education system is evident by their success and the success of the many other students who have gone on to be leaders in so many areas. The Williams government believes that education is central to not only our success as individuals, but to our success as a province. More than $1 billion has been invested in the education system this year alone and we will continue to support our world-class post-secondary institutions, while improving access and affordability for current and future students.”
Also addressing the students were Dr. Eddy Campbell, vice-president academic, Memorial University, and Iris Petten, Marine Institute’s Advisory Committee.
In total, 77 scholarships were awarded.
The Marine Institute is North America’s most comprehensive institute dedicated to education, training, applied research and industrial support for the oceans industries.
