The winners of Memorial’s Faculty of Arts Become Your Future...in 400 words or less competition have been chosen. The contest, offered this year for the first time, asked Grade 12 students to imagine where an arts education would take them in the next decade, and provide a creative treatment written from their future.
Chris Martin, a student of Marystown Central High School, was awarded a voucher for full year’s tuition for his entry “The Future Encyclopedia.” His encyclopedia entry provided biographical details on his life and career. After completing a bachelor of arts with a double major in French and History, Mr. Martin completed his BEd. By 2017, he was the Director of Education for the Eastern School Board. That led to a meteoric political career, and in 2032 he became Prime Minister of Canada.
“The calibre of the entries was incredible,” said Denise Hooper, senior career development co-ordinator for Arts and one of the contest judges. “The students really got into the idea of daydreaming their futures, and wrote about some very exciting career paths.”
She said some 40 entrants talked of how studying languages and anthropology led to international careers. Others imagined going on to study medicine, law or journalism. The entries took the form of award acceptance speeches, short documentaries, plays, poems and often, letters home to Mom and Dad or friends from exotic locales.
Dr. Reeta Tremblay, dean of Arts, noted, “We know that acquiring the critical skills a liberal arts education provides is an excellent springboard to a wide range of careers. We were very happy that the students who entered our contest also understood this. Their future plans are very inspiring!”
In fact, the faculty was so impressed with the entries, it added four runner-up prizes of $200 each toward the first year of study in Memorial’s Faculty of Arts.
