News Release

REF NO.: 90

SUBJECT: Memorial University produces unique holiday greeting cards

DATE: December 12, 2006

Sending a special holiday message with a splash of Newfoundland and Labrador history has been made a whole lot easier again this year thanks to a series of unique cards produced by Memorial University of Newfoundland which feature words from this province’s rich vernacular.
The cards feature interesting words handpicked from the best-selling Dictionary of Newfoundland English.
The project was spearheaded by Image Services, a unit within the Division of Marketing and Communications. The idea for the special cards was actually hatched in 2004 when two cards featuring a star and a tree on their covers were designed. Last year, cards featuring a candle and a gift box were created. All four were best sellers. This year, Image Services decided to re-release the cards with two new designs: a pair of snowshoes and a holiday pudding.
All six cards feature an assortment of interesting words – some of which are no longer used in everyday conversations including duff, babbish, horsy-hops, crunnick, tommy-sticker and janneys. The words are the building components instead of traditional lines. Brief definitions of the words are printed on the back of each card along with the university logo.
They’re now on sale in the University Bookstore for $16.50, plus tax for 12 cards. Each package consists of two of the six designs, plus envelopes. They come pre-printed with “Season’s Greetings” on the inside. They’re scored but packaged flat for ease of running through a printer.
The cards were designed by Image Services and printed by Memorial’s Printing Services office.
