Dr. Lilly Walker, dean of Student Affairs and Services, together with Aimee Power, a fourth-year honours psychology student and the current Miss Newfoundland and Labrador, will officially launch I Love MUNdays at 10:15 a.m., on Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2006, in the University Centre Food Court on Memorial’s St. John’s campus.
The opening ceremonies include a performance by The Scruncheons, an experimental percussion-based performance group based at Memorial’s School of Music.
I Love MUNdays is the annual fall celebrations on Memorial’s St. John’s campus that recognizes the university’s diverse accomplishments, stellar students and staff, unique programs and the ingenuity of the university community.
A number of special events have been planned geared towards students, staff, faculty and alumni both in St. John’s and at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in Corner Brook during I Fell for Grenfell.
Media agencies are encouraged to send representatives to this year’s events.
This year, some of the highlights on the St. John’s campus include:
TA Loeffler Everest Lap-a-thon: Wednesday, Oct. 25, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Field House. Dr. TA Loeffler, a professor in Memorial’s School of Human Kinetics and Recreation, is planning to conquer Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak, later this year. Participants are being encouraged to walk or run all or part of the distance that’s equivalent to reaching the top of Everest – roughly 35 laps around the Field House.
Parade of Flags: Thursday, Oct. 26, 12-1 p.m., commencing at the International Student Advising Office, Burton’s Pond Apartments. Students will parade through the St. John’s campus proudly displaying the 81 flags of the countries represented on campus.
Kindness Friday: Friday, Oct. 27, all day. Students, staff and faculty are being asked to make an extra effort on Kindness Friday to do little acts of kindness for another member of the university community, or to engage in a volunteer activity in the larger community.
Community Service Day: Saturday, Oct. 28, various times. Students will take part in a number of volunteer activities including a tree and bulb planting event from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.; they’ll visit long-tern care homes from 1-3 p.m. and 2-4 p.m. and take part in a special event at the Froude Avenue Community Centre from 2-4 p.m.
4th annual Barnes House Truck Pull: Sunday, Oct. 29, 12 p.m., Parking Lot 15 near the School of Music. Sponsored by Barnes House on the St. John’s campus, this event aims to raise money and awareness for the Iris Kirby House. In a high spirit event, teams of 10 will attempt pull a transport truck the fastest across the finish line.
