SUBJECT: Grenfell - Klezmer band visits Corner Brook

CORNER BROOK – Grenfell’s visual arts program and Memorial’s School of Music are pleased to announce two performances in Corner Brook by Newfoundland’s premier Klezmer Band, B’ys in da Shtetl. This 10-piece ensemble emerged from a course offered this year at the School of Music by visiting faculty member and flutist Dr. Christine Gangelhoff.
This will be the first opportunity for West Coast audiences to see this dynamic group. Klezmer music, originating in Eastern Europe, has traditionally been a part of community celebrations, most commonly used for Jewish weddings. This joyous, festive folk music was born in the shtetls – small Jewish villages – found throughout Eastern Europe. B’ys in da Shtetl bring the shtetl to Newfoundland.
The instrumentation of the university group (trumpet, violins, bass, guitars, drums, flute) is not strictly traditional, but the group has embraced the Klezmer style and plays with great enthusiasm, creating a fun-filled sound that invites dancing and crowd participation.
In addition, da B’ys will be joined by St. John’s turntable-ist, DJ Russtafari.
You can see them on Friday, March 23, 8:30 p.m. at Gitano’s Supper Club and Tapas Bar, and Saturday, March 24 at 9 p.m. at the GCSU Backlot. Admission to the Grenfell College performance is $5 for students and $8 for the general public. A cash bar and door prizes will be offered. Proceeds raised will go toward the Visual Arts Travel Fund.
