SUBJECT: Grenfell - Grenfell College to offer new degree in resource management
DATE: July 18, 2007
Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, Memorial University’s Corner Brook campus, will offer a new degree in resource management beginning this fall.
The bachelor of resource management, which was approved by Memorial’s Senate in May, will first offer a concentration in sustainable resource management. Other concentrations are currently being considered for further development.
“This degree will prepare students to undertake the management of renewable and non-renewable resources such as water, forests and oil and gas,” said Dr. John Ashton, college principal. “Students will investigate whether society is using resources responsibly, and will be positioned to become leaders in this developing field – governments, non-governmental organizations and industry are all in need of experts who are trained to take on the global issue of unsustainable exploitation of our natural resources.”
Graduates will be prepared for a wide variety of careers including resource management in the public service or private industry, environmental policy development, ecological restoration and domestic and international governmental and non-governmental organizations. Or, if they wish to continue on with advanced studies in related fields, graduates might consider disciplines such as geography, marine studies, environmental planning, oil and gas studies and environmental law.
“The introduction of this new program aligns with our strategic goal of establishing Sir Wilfred Grenfell College as a centre for environmental education and research,” said Dr. Ashton. “It also supports the initiative announced in this year’s provincial budget to fund the establishment of a Centre for Environmental Policy on the Grenfell Campus. As the province moves to introduce new sustainable development legislation and to formalize a research and development strategy, the BRM takes on added significance. The faculty and graduates of this program will be important generators of the core knowledge and expertise that will help ensure the informed stewardship and management of our crucial natural resources for generations to come.”
