SUBJECT: Grenfell - Fourth-year student exhibition to open at art gallery

The visual arts program’s annual fourth-year students exhibition, segment, will be held at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College Art Gallery April 20 to June 2.
The exhibition presents new work in a variety of disciplines by 15 fourth-year students of the visual arts program at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, Memorial University’s Corner Brook campus.
The artists exhibiting in segment are Mark Colbert, Amanda Duffett, Mike Gough, Sandi Hartling, Noriko Matsubara, Ashley Neville, Linda Peckford, Christina Rees, Haley Richard, Rourke James Card, Yani Sheng, Stefanie Smith, Laura Tiller, Suzanne van Niekerk and Jillian Waite. Artworks in the exhibition include photography, painting, sculpture, drawing, installation, performance and video. The artists’ conceptual concerns reflect the variety and scope of current interests in contemporary art.
Amanda Duffett’s work uses photography to explore gender issues, focusing on the female form with intimate portraiture.
“Like most young women I am constantly bombarded with blatant products and suggestions to improve myself and my physical appearance,” says Ms. Duffett. “I have become very interested in observing this and its effects on women, by examining my own reactions, struggles and emotions.”
Linda Peckford sees her work as a reflection of her personality and her life experiences of growing up in Change Islands, a small island community on the northeast coast of Newfoundland.
“My passion for preserving our rich heritage and culture has always been present in my work; however, recently I have added a more personal element,” she says. “Experimenting with the mixed media, the combination of textiles and metals, and sculpture paintings, I have been exploring themes such as the subservient and exploitative roles of women of rural Newfoundland history, community spirit and war memorials.”
The visual arts program is a professional program intended to educate and train students in the history, theory and practice of the visual arts. The four-year BFA (visual arts) offers intensive studio courses incorporating a balanced mix of theory and practice. In the early stages of the program, students work in a variety of media to express their artistic ideas and personal vision. As their skills develop, the program places an increasing emphasis on conceptual and theoretical issues. The fourth-year students’ exhibition is a valuable opportunity for students to exhibit their work in a professional gallery space, and to benefit from public exposure.
The exhibition continues until June 2. The gallery will host a reception in honour of the artists on Friday, April 20, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Members of the public, as well as family and friends of the artists, are invited to attend.
Sir Wilfred Grenfell College Art Gallery is open to the public Tuesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The gallery is located on the second floor of the Fine Arts Building at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College. Admission is free. The gallery is wheelchair accessible.
