SUBJECT: Conference to focus on economic development benefits of the oil and gas industry in Newfoundland and Labrador

What economic development benefits are the province of Newfoundland and Labrador and its citizens receiving from the oil and gas industry? What are we doing to maximize economic development from oil and gas throughout Newfoundland and Labrador? What else could we be doing?
These questions will be at the centre of a conference on Economic Development Benefits of Oil and Gas Industry in Newfoundland and Labrador that is being held in St. John's on Wed., May 16, 2007, at the Delta Hotel, St. John's from 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. An initiative of Memorial University's Leslie Harris Centre for Regional Policy and Development and the Oil and Gas Development Partnership, the conference will bring together community leaders and representatives of economic development groups, oil companies, the supply and service community, business groups, labour, governments and academe to discuss these important questions for the future of Newfoundland and Labrador.
The topics that will be addressed during the conference include:
- What business, employment, community and regional economic development is oil and gas activity currently delivering to Newfoundland and Labrador?
- What is the experience of this on the ground, not only in St. John's but on the Isthmus of Avalon, the Burin Peninsula, the West Coast and elsewhere?
- How are governments, community and regional development organizations, Memorial University, the private sector, labour and others fostering and promoting the oil and gas industry-related economic interests of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians?
- What could we be doing better, and who needs to do what?
